The other day, we were at a restaurant, fully enjoying the biscuits and gravy. Nothing fancy, just one of those good ol’ Southern places where the biscuits are hot and fresh, and the gravy is like a gift sent down from Heaven above. Conversations overlap, coffee cups being refilled, and somewhere nearby, there’s always a toddler dropping crayons, or somebody’s Pawpaw talking politics a little louder than necessary.
Now before we eat, we pray.
Not a fancy prayer. Not a long prayer. Just us holding hands right there at the table and thanking God for the food and for another day together. I’ll be honest… It’s gotten a little rare to see anymore.
So anytime I notice another family praying in public, I get weirdly excited about it. Kind of like when I spot another Dexcom user out there in the wild and silently think, “Oh! You get it too!” 😂
Well, a family came in and sat behind us. Three little kids, grandparents, the whole crew. You could hear the happy chaos before food even hit the table. And then it happened.
After that family prayed together, one of the little kids said – and loud enough for half the restaurant to hear:
“Did you know Jesus loves you?! And donuts too!”
Oh my. There I sat, emotional support bacon in front of me, trying to keep it together while this tiny little preacher accidentally delivered the sermon of the week.
Because honestly? That child wasn’t trying to impress anybody. Wasn’t arguing theology. Wasn’t trying to “win souls.” Wasn’t worried about what the world thought. She was just excited.
Excited enough to tell somebody that Jesus loves them.
And somehow… somewhere along the way… adults lose some of that.
We complicate everything, debate everything, analyze everything, and we turn faith into arguments and Facebook comments about who’s right and who’s wrong. Meanwhile, a child summed it all up in one sentence between breakfast orders and crayons.
Jesus loves you.
And donuts too.
Now listen, theologically speaking, I can’t confirm Heaven runs on Krispy Kreme. But I can tell you this:
God has a way of using the smallest things to reach tired hearts. And lately? My heart has been tired. Grief changes you. Stress changes you. Life changes you. Some days it feels like the whole world is loud and heavy and angry for no reason at all. People snapping at each other over things that won’t matter in a hundred years.
But then God sends a little reminder in the form of a child with sticky fingers and excitement in their voice.
And there I sat, emotional over breakfast food and the goodness of a child’s heart. Honestly, maybe the world doesn’t need more people yelling about Jesus. Maybe it just needs more people joyful enough to share Him the way children do.
Pure.
Simple.
Loving.
Without embarrassment.
Without fear.
Without an agenda.
Just:
“Did you know Jesus loves you?”
And if we’re being honest….
the donuts are a pretty nice bonus too. 🍩
